Louisiana Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit organization dedicated
to eliminating fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings
and railroad rights-of-way. Operation Lifesaver is sponsored by the
Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, the Louisiana Department of
Transportation and Development as well as all six class 1 railroads
and two shortlines.

Louisiana Operation Lifesaver FINAL SPEECH CONTEST WINNERS:
The Regional LA OL speech contest was held on February 21st in the following regions:
- Region 1, New Orleans – winner Betsy Mahler, Thibodaux High School
- Region 2, Lafayette – winner Charlotte Clark, Lafayette High School
- Region 3, Alexandria – winner Jim Corley, Florien High School
- Region 4, Monroe – winner Allison Wise, Glenbrook School
The final contest was held on March 21st in conjunction with the
Students Against Destructive Decisions "Take Action 2003" Youth
Conference in Alexandria, LA. The Final Contest judges were Bobby
Deen, Chairman, LA Highway Safety Commission from Natchitoches, LA;
James E. Champagne, LA Highway Safety Commission from Baton Rouge, LA;
Sam Stephenson, Union Pacific Railroad from Spring, Texas.
The winners are as follows:
- Allison Wise – 1st Place - $1000 cash prize
- Jim Corley – 2nd Place – $750 cash prize
- Betsy Mahler – 3rd Place - $500 cash prize
- Charlotte Clark – 4th Place - $250 cash prize
Each of the winner”s sponsors received a $100 gift certificate to Walmart for their contestant making it to the final contest.
Allison Wise, 2003 LA Operation Lifesaver Speech Contest Winner,
will receive an all-expense paid trip for herself and a sponsor or
parent to attend the Super Regional Workshop hosted by Operation
Lifesaver Regions 5 and 6 in Overland Park, Kansas, July 27-30, 2003.
Allison will be giving her winning speech at the workshop.
